Consultation on proposed tower by Woolwich Tesco this weekend

As reported last week, Meyer Homes are planning a 30-storey tower on the greenery in front of Tesco in Woolwich.

There’s now a website, which is here, and they’ll be consultation on these dates:

Saturday 25 March 2017, 11am-3pm

Woolwich Town Hall (Room 4), Wellington Street, Woolwich SE18 6HQ

Monday 27 March 2017, 12pm – 7pm

The Tramshed (Studio space), 51-53 Woolwich New Road, London, SE18 6ES

Original tower proposal

Tesco’s earlier plan is seen above, and the new design should be revealed this weekend. Since those plans there have however been some things which could put a halt to this tower.

Firstly, the planning permission from 2007 which allowed a tall tower has elapsed. Meyer Homes have applied to renew them.

Second, since 2007 there has been a new St Thomas Street area masterplan drawn up for the area. Here’s an image from the 2016 second draft which had a height of 12-15 storeys for this site:

This image is taken from page 38 of this document.

With all this in mind it’ll be interesting to see what Meyer Homes show at the consultation events. and how far any plans for a tower get.

Incidentally, the Thomas Street masterplan also foresees the demolition of these buildings:
