£50,000 to improve underpass in Thamesmead as part of wider improvement scheme

Peabody have announced a £50k (excluding VAT) fund to spruce up an underpass in Thamesmead. Bids must be in by 13th September.

The underpass is in The Moorings area of Thamesmead and links shops at Arnott Close to Thamesmead Town Centre.

This area of Thamesmead is further north of buildings now undergoing comprehensive redevelopment to the south, and was built later in the 1970s; 1974-79 to be precise. The architecture is much more simplified after high costs building earlier parts of Thamesmead led to numerous cut backs. There are 1,450 homes.

I wrote about the area in the past, and noted how the extensive space could be used for any future DLR or London Overground station.

It’s part of a wider program to improve public spaces in the area:

Building work is now underway at another Peabody site called “The Reach”. The 66-home development was covered here.
