Growth in tourists visiting Greenwich continues
Greenwich has seen growth in tourist numbers continue with latest figures showing hotel stays in the borough up 6.4% in 2018.
Total visitor numbers for 2018 were 1% higher than the year before which continues strong growth in 2017 when visitors brought in £1.4 billion – a rise of 5.6% from 2016.
2019 promises to bring yet more people as a new music venue named Magazine opens near the o2 with capacity for up to 10,000 people. Events such as a summer music festival and Christmas festival are on the planning board. The nearby Design District and market is also possibly opening before the end of 2019.
Hotel expansion however seems to have slowed. The shell of a planned Ibis hotel on Tunnel Avenue hasn’t progressed since Holiday Inn took over and submitted new plans.
Travelodge hoped to open a hotel nearby but Greenwich Council blocked the move. It’s one I’d expect the hotel group to win on appeal if they can assure the planning inspector that building work will not impinge upon Silvertown Tunnel construction work.
On the flipside expansion work to the Hilton hotel has been submitted.
And 300 rooms are planned at the former Magistrates Court site.
