New school proposed in Eltham / Lee area
Plans for a secondary school and sixth form have been submitted on the site of Bowring Group Sports Centre in Eltham. Well, I think of this spot more as Lee but the application states Eltham. If locals think it’s actually in Lee I’ll change the headline.
The school currently has 89 pupils and is looking to expand to 765.
The applications states “Demolition of existing clubhouse and construction of a part two/part three storey building including basement providing a five form entry Secondary School and Sixth Form including associated landscaping
works, car parking, boundary treatment and Multi Use Games Area (MUGA)”.
The site is near to the current International Academy of Greenwich who are also behind this plan. Yep, another school calling itself Greenwich rather than the actual town it’s located in. See also a school in Charlton, which I covered this week and is expanding from 600 to 950 students.
Plans were actually submitted back in December but this latest application has been requested by Greenwich Council to look at effects in the area.
It’s estimated London will require 77,700 extra secondary school places by 2022/23. Demand for school places will increase both London-wide and locally in coming years as thousands of homes complete in Kidbrooke. The towers by the station are now seeing people move in – and many other houses and flats and either under way or in planning.
There’s also plans for Lee Gate centre redevelopment very close by.
The site is currently designated as Metropolitan Open Land which has in part necessitated this further application.

If the new school building falls under the SE12 post code then it would be classed as Lee. I would say the with an ever increasing population the new school is very much needed along with the school in Charlton.
There is already a lack of school places for children and large class sizes in some other local schools. So I believe the new schools will be welcomed by parents.
