Consultation on over 600 homes at former Woolwich Poly school site
Legal and General will hold consultation events this week on plans to build over 600 homes at the former site of Woolwich Polytechnic school on Macbean Street in Woolwich town centre.
The first event runs this Thursday from 3pm-7pm and then another on Saturday from 11:30am to 3pm. Both are at South London Academy at 115-123 Powis Street which is above Clarks and Argos.
I’ve been covering developments on the site over recent years. After Victorian school buildings on site were demolished around a decade ago the site has mainly lay empty with applications for car parks rejected.
Then the plot was purchased by L&G in July 2018 who last month asked Greenwich Council about the possibility of constructing a 22-floor tower. This event will reveal whether they are pursuing buildings of similar height.
Legal and General are also behind plans for towers in Lewisham town centre along Loampit Vale on the site of Sports Direct, yet despite approval a couple of years ago no progress has been made.
This latest Woolwich scheme joins a long list either recently completed or in progress:
The scheme joins many others in Woolwich either approved or planned including:

Whatever happened to the food market planned for this area? Wool yard if I recall with shipping containers as food ‘trucks’ etc? Seems far more useful and inspiring (given closure of Market) than further bland, hideously priced apartments
Iceland took over the unit and wanted to use the yard behind where the market was planned I believe. Not just for deliveries to the store but vans for home deliveries from the shop. That’s what I was told.
Much needed homes to renovate the area Which is in dire need of modernisation
The area around Macbean Street does need to be regenerated, However, it would be nice if the old building on the site could be saved and refurbished as part of the new development.
It is a shame the Wool Yard market did not get to go ahead, Improving the existing market and increasing the hours the market is open could encourage new market traders to the Woolwich area.
I agree that the existing buildings on site should stay otherwise it would be a waste.
As far as I am concerned I took a walk around there from the end of Powis Street and it was really dead. So, anything that could inject some life there would be great.
On a side note, the Island Site was one of the developments that really excited me. Is this still happening? I look at the proposal on Greenwich planning website and it still says a decision is to be made??
