Black lives matter protest in Peckham

A protest has begun in Peckham this afternoon in relation to black lives matter and the murder of an unarmed man by police in the States.

A number of controversial videos showing arrests in south east London have also appeared on social media in recent days.

Around 50 people are matching in the town with people currently gathering in a park.

A number of police vehicles are in the area.

As a private renter living costs are very high and ads bring in relatively little to the site. I run it alone, and you can support me through Paypal with a one-off or monthly donation here

Finally there's the Ko-fi option

  • Social distnacing clearly not being adhered too on this march so not very well organised at all i am afraid.

I understand them marching as a one off protest today but the social distancing rules must be adhered too at all times for everyones own health and safety !!

I really cannot say this loud enough.

    • Many people seen were wearing masks – as in corona virus facial masks the general public are often wearing.

      • That’s really good to know Murky. As we really want to stop the spread of corona virus to stop more people becoming seriously ill or sadly losing their lives from this nasty horrible virus.,

    • Unless you were at the march, it is difficult to come the the conclusion that social distancing was not adhered to based on the one photo here.

  • Tbh i understand people wanting to “social distance” but im not being funny here but a innocent man lost his life along with many others. it’s 2020 it’s time to stop racism they are brothers and sisters just like us. Should be treated the same. If i had known about the march i would of been there in a heart beat. Black lives matter.

    • JAG i do not disagree with you and I did say i understood why people were marching.

I was only concerned with regard to social distancing that is all. As we do not want a return to a major increase in covid-19 cases and a further lockdown.

Of course racism needs to be stopped whether it is a white person being racist to black person or a person from another ethnic minority or a black person being racist to a white person or a person from another ethnic minority It all needs to stop and now.

As you rightly say it is 2020 and there is absolutely no need for racism in the modern world. Everyone shoul;be treated equally and fairly regardless of their age, race, sex, sexual orientation religion, political association, ethnic origin, or any other individual or group …

Graham, I totally agree with your comment you posted as above.

But please lets not forget people with disabilities who can be subject to a lot of abuse and hate crime through no fault of their own.

    • Cummings was hounded for weeks for failing to adhere to stick to the rules, despite exercising social distancing. These people are outraged but that does not give them the right to undo months of effort to rid this virus. If it does, then they should all be subject to the level of abuse Cummings received.

      • He didnt exercise social distancing for one (went back to work after wife caught virus and also drove child to hospital) but anyway, one is an advisor who helped draw up rules and immediately broke them, the other are Joe public protesting (and many wore PPE).

        • He didn’t draw up the rules. I am sick of this fallacy.

  • You cannot physically distance at a demonstration and the people who are flocking to parks and beaches pose an equal risk of a second wave of Covid-19.

I am sickened at the death of another unarmed black man at the hands of racist police. When will this sort of behaviour end?

    • I agree anonymous201486 with what you say with regard to social distancing with people on beachjes parks etc. I will be avioding both of these for sometime to come as feel the risk still remain too high. Especially if in a vulnerable group.

Personally I would rather stay in lockdown for a few more weeks to be safe rather than sorry.

    • I agree but I don’t think the issue is just a black/white or race issue, I think there’s a general police problem of the lack of treating the public with respect and misuse of power.
Yes there are great officers and they work under incredibly stressful situations, but i’ve unfortunately seen far far too many instances where the police have misused their powers, used bullying tactics, physically assault and even lied (on camera) with little or no reprocussion.
The police are also becoming more and more politicised (in my opinion) and selectively enforce the law.
More and more public are now seeing this and it erodes trust between the public & police which isn’t good for anyone.

  • @Glenn, that is a tone deaf response which does not take into account the systematic, centuries old mistreatment of black peoples.
