Woolwich public space with fountains open beside Thames

Work to install a new public space between towers in Woolwich has opened to the public with little fanfare in recent days.

The inimitable Woolwich Pigeon sums it up well:

Fountains and a green space are included.

I’ve been covering this space for a few years now. A post here looked at it back in 2018. The image above incidentally shows design alterations to forthcoming towers, including the addition of yellow on balconies and alterations at street level.

Berkeley Homes are behind the new space which sits between recently completed towers and those currently under construction on the former Waterfront leisure centre car park.

Green space to foreground will be built upon

A large expanse of green named Maribor Park currently exists beside the new space.

Final plans

In time some of this will be built upon and a green strip will run from the newly created space towards the town centre.

  • Brilliant looks great. This is what Woolwich needs now.

    We need to bring Woolwich back up from the downtrodden no go area it has been allowed to become riddled with anti social behaviour.

    We need now to start construction on the Spray Street development and the new Woolwich Leisure Centre opposite General Gordon Square as soon as possible.

    Also we need to have some real investment in the Woolwich area improving the Town Centre including Hare Street, Powis Street,etc While also improving public areas to make them brighter and safer for everyone to use.

  • Well it’s Woolwich so can’t blame them for lack of scope or vision. Still it’s welcome particularly as Graham says as a portent of future investment and transformation. It may even be the realisation of Thamesmead as it was meant to be, if it proves successful. Here’s hoping this kind of project is not restricted to the confines of the Arsenal walls

    • Charles you mentioned, maybe the realisation of what Thamesmead was meant to be, take a look at abbeywood estate and thamesmead now to see what it will become with a little bit of help from Greenwich council to run things. Steve N
