Greenwich Union pub shut for good
The Greenwich Union pub owned by Meantime Brewery has shut for good after 19 years of operation according to a notice on their website.
It marks further retrenchment of Meantime from pub operation since they were purchased by Asahi. The Old Brewery pub site in the Naval College was sold to Young’s some time ago. A statement announcing the pub closure recommends visiting the brewery tap nearby.
Sad times as I visited the Union a fair few times over the years having a Yakima Red or two. I’ve been going since at least the mid 2000s and always enjoyed it. It was a cosy, narrow little place with a cute beer garden out the back. Lots of memories there.
Back in March the pub next door – Richard 1st (which is owned by Young’s) –announced a revamp.
Always such a shame to see a business close. We are now losing so many of these quieter little pubs where you can actually still enjoy a quite drink and here each other talk.
I like the smaller independent pubs.and those that sell their own brewed beers.

Sad news.
Terrible news, one of the few pubs in Greenwich with a proper beer selection, and music was usually very good too. Gutted also for the staff who were always friendly and helpful.
That’s a shame but in these covid times, not surprising. The closure is also in line with the downturn in the pub trade of recent years.
The building is quite pretty, but I note that the upper floors seem to be occupied, so maybe there isn’t the scope for residential redevelopment.
This is a real shame – my favourite of the pubs on that side of Greenwich. Always seemed busy enough but who knows. The brewery taproom just isn’t the same. The staff were always very friendly/knowledgeable and it had a great selection – always enjoyed reading through the menu book and having a look at what was in the fridges & on tap.
That is a disappointment. Never cheap, but always good. I’ve never regretted an evening in the Union, and it’s welcomed a proper cross-section of my friends and acquaintances over the years. Never cheap, but always good.
(Don’t you hate it when Cut and Paste turns out to have been Copy and Paste?)
