Thames Barrier to close as “one of the highest” tidal surges forecast
The Thames Barrier is likely to close tomorrow as a 1 metre tidal surge coming from the North Sea is expected to head up the Thames.
⚠️ The @metoffice currently forecasts a 1m surge close to high tide at #Southend tomorrow.
Combined with the spring tide and high river flows, it’s producing some of the highest forecast levels in #London we’ve seen.#ThamesBarrier very likely to be closing around lunchtime. pic.twitter.com/mtmoULKDmS

North Sea surges are some of the most dangerous weather and tidal conditions that can result in flooding. It caused the notorious 1953 flood which in turn laid the way for the Thames Barrier. Expect some dramatic pictures of the Thames bank which appear every few months – but hopefully no more than that.
