Aldi store approved in Greenwich town centre
A plan to open a new branch of Aldi in Greenwich has been approved this week by Greenwich Council.
The store will be in the former Poundstretcher site at 245-247 Greenwich High Road which closed earlier this year. Before that is was a Budgens, co op, and a Somerfield.
Aldi have another branch just east in Charlton though in quite a different environment at Brocklebank retail park. This Aldi Local is an area of high footfall and numerous homes in the near vicinity.
The first UK Aldi Local opened in Balham in 2019. They generally stock fewer heavy items as many visitors will not arrive by car. They’ll be plenty more local custom in coming years with numerous housing developments including new homes at the former police station site and hotel at the former Magistrates’ Court approved in June 2020.
Another block on the junction of Greenwich High Road and Norman Road is well on the way to completion.
Plans can be seen here.

I think the new Aldi Local Store will be a success in Greenwich Town Centre as there is a lot of footfall in the area from local residents students from Greenwich University and other local colleges as well as visitors to Greenwich once travel restrictions are lifted again.
Is there a date for the opening?
I’ve been watching them develop the site and wondering what’s going on thanks. They have actually pulled the wall down next door and extended into the burger restaurant so it will actually be a much larger unit than before.
Good news. Hopefully this will bring at least a little life back into that end of Greenwich town centre: we live nearby and it’s become an lifeless void of luxury apartments.
The pound shop that preceded this was excellent. The burger restaurant is no loss at all. The closure of the Borough Hall took much of the heart out of the area.
It will be good for the locals but will not be a destination shop for those from further afield especially as that carpark is small and prone to ‘scamming’ by the operators.
That is one reason why it is called Aldii Local to serve the local communty and will be slightly different from the larger Aldi Stores on retail parks.
