Plans in for new pub & brewery at former Blackheath Barclays bank
An application to convert the former Barclays bank at the Standard in Blackheath into a place for a drink is now viewable on the Greenwich planning portal.
The Green Goddess will see a mini brewery on site with drinking area on ground and possibly the basement level, and who doesn’t love a former bank vault to drink in? Plans state: “The design includes a seating area for around 50 individuals in the main bar area along with potential further seating in the basement (former vault)”.
Common Rioters brewery are behind plans for the site just over from the Royal Standard – which was a regular drinking spot for me for quite a while. Common Rioters are an independent family brewery based in Plumstead from where it derives its name, after the Plumstead Common riots in 1876.
Barclays vacated the building in January 2021 which had been in use as a bank since construction in 1890. A number of other former Barclays banks are still vacant such as in Blackheath town centre.
Brewery
A very small brewery would be located on site. These are usually pretty quite and shouldn’t cause many problems. The brewery state: “Education is a core theme of the concept – It’s planned to hold occasional brewery tours and ‘be a brewer’ events as well as sommelier led tasting and training sessions.”
The plan states an opening date of June 2020. Lots to like about this – which is set to be an excellent local addition from an independent brewery in the borough.

Really positive news and will be a welcome addition.
Although I was sorry to see the Blackheath Standard branch of Barclays close leaving the area with out a bank.
I wish the Plumstead Rioters Brewery every success with their application to turrn the old Barclays Bank Building at Blackheath Royal standard in to a new pub and mini brewery. Bringing the building back in to use for the local community.
I wish a new owner could also be found for the old Nat West Bank building on Old Dover Road.
Presumably their planning application to open a pub/brewery in the new development in Jack’s Acre in Rochester Way wasn’t successful. A shame as that area is a beer desert whereas the Standard area already has two pubs.
Dave you are not wrong. The Rochester Way area in Kidbrooke does lack amenities and it is deserted when it comes to shops, pubs and other amenities for local residents.
