High winds shut Dartford crossing: gridlock results

High winds have forced the closure of the Dartford crossing today leading to widespread congestion. Woolwich ferry is also closed due to the weather.

There is stationary traffic around much of Dartford, alongside the A2 in Greenwich as drivers head to the Blackwall Tunnel. Queues back up towards Kidbrooke.

The A2 is queuing eastbound from Dartford at the M25 junction all the way back to Sidcup. Traffic is slow going in Erith and Slade Green.

Silvertown Tunnel would be of limited use in a time like this, as southbound traffic is already approaching peak capacity time for a normal day, let alone with extra traffic from Silvertown diverting from Dartford.

The bridge is expected to remain closed until at least 5pm.
