Aldi in Greenwich town centre set to open end of October 2021

A new Aldi store in Greenwich is set to open on 28th October 2021.

The unit is located on Greenwich High Road in a former Poundstretcher unit alongside a neighbouring unit housing Greenwich Grill.

Plans to open the store were approved earlier this year.

The store is ideally placed for tourist traffic located between Greenwich station and many sites. It also has a large number of new residents moving into new-build blocks to entice.

The Greenwich branch is under Aldi’s Local banner – which is a concept that began in 2019 with a store in Balham.

These are town centre stores where many people are not expected to shop using cars. As such, bulkier items including those in centre aisles will be reduced in number.

There is of course a car park, which will possibly see a temporary Post Office as plans have been submitted to demolish the existing building.

That was covered on this site last month.

It’s somewhat surprising this area of town with surface parking and low-rise buildings between single and three storeys in height has survived this long given it’s location.

The land owner could go for 4-5 stories in height with flats above parking (if retained at all) alongside commercial and educational space.

There’s also sizable amounts of vacant land behind neighbouring buildings.

It wouldn’t be a great surprise to see development plans in the coming few years.

As a private renter living costs are very high and ads bring in relatively little to the site. I run it alone, and you can support me through Paypal with a one-off or monthly donation here

Another option is via Patreon with offers monthly payments by clicking here

Finally there's the Ko-fi option

Many thanks

There's also a Facebook page for the site here

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Are the prices in Aldi locals the same as Aldi main stores? I understand different ranges but if prices higher as its a ‘convenience’ store then removes Aldi’s main selling point.

  • I wonder how it will compare price-wise with the Sainsburys Local opposite it. As Derek says people tend to equate Aldi with low prices. Still, at least consumers will have the chance to find for themselves without having to go too far out of their way.
