Bridge closure to impact Greenwich to Deptford road

Major delays are expected from next month as a five week partial closure of Creek Road’s bascale bridge begins between Greenwich and Deptford.

The bridge over Deptford Creek needs substantial repair work. The eastbound carriageway will be closed for five week between 3 April and 12 May.

Bus routes requiring diversions include the 188, 199, n1 and n199.

Upgrade work was a factor in the long delayed opening of Cycleway 4 between Deptford and Greenwich.

The bridge was last upgraded in 2002 with deterioration accelerating from 2020 according to Greenwich Council.

The bridge lifts to allow boats to pass between the Thames and Creek, though far less now than in previous decades.

The bridge also marks the town boundary between Deptford and Greenwich, though Greenwich borough territory extends a short distance into Deptford to the west of the bridge.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Couldn’t find anything about this on Greenwich Borough website. Useless as ever.

BTW it’s bascule, not bascale, apparently from the french for balance. Tower Bridge has the same design.
