Thamesmead’s new library is now open
A new library in Thamesmead built as part of a Peabody redevelopment project is now open to the public.
The site is known as “The Nest” and sits near Southmere lake at Cygnet Square.
That’s the same site that formerly housed Tavy Bridge, with the library replacing the old Newacres library beside Harrow Manorway.
The building’s full opening has been delayed for some time owing to damp. Space upstairs has however been in use for some time.
Between the closure of Newacres and opening of the nest facilities were located in not particularly salubrious spot near Sewell Road.
Delays in building homes at Tavy bridge after Peabody took over Gallions Housing Association contributed to a decade without a permanent facility.
An official opening will be held on 12th April featuring performances by local groups alongside tours. There will be face painting, storytelling and circus skills on show.
Hahahah, “damp and dingy” was one of the epithets used extensively to justify bringing down the magnificent Tavy Bridge
