Woolwich town centre shop seeks car parking on green space
A newly opened supermarket in Woolwich town centre is seeking to install parking spaces on a green area.
It’s a relatively small area, with the application stating: “replacement of existing green area with 3no. additional car parking spaces in association with no.131 Powis Street”.
Removal of an area of greenery would seem at odds with a town centre upgrade project set to begin this summer with a stated aim of increasing landscaping.
Existing car park
A substantial car park already exists beside and behind the shop, with disabled spaces situated close to the shop entrance. Proposed spaces on the greenery are not disabled-only.
The application states the “site benefits from excellent communication with public transport within short waking distance including high street and local buses. PTAL score of 6A”.
Given the existing car park, a desire for more green space not less and excellent transport links, replacing green space – even if small – for car parking seems unlikely.
We should have more greenery and not less! Green spaces no matter how small help urban wildlife to survive. I think paving over front yards, laying on artificial grass over fertile soil etc. should all be frowned upon in this age we live in. Cars should only be for those who can’t get around easily and even then nobody needs a 4×4 or a supercar.
Three spaces? Is this so the manager, his wife and daughter can park their Mercedes there?
Would be a great space for a pocket park. I can’t imagine Greenwich really know what they are though
