Troubled Chinese developer selling major site beside Blackwall tunnel approach

A Chinese developer in serious financial difficulties has placed a plot of land in London up for sale.

Country Garden are disposing of the Calico Wharf plot located beside the A12 and not too far from Bromley-by-Bow station.

The site is also near a proposed footbridge over the River Lea – covered back in October 2023 – and Poplar Riverside where an appeal to build 1,500-homes was recently approved.

Country Garden purchased the Calico Wharf site from Galliard in 2017 with plans to build 785 homes. In 2023 that increased to more than 952.

The company has been in turmoil for months amid a Chinese property slump. Another large Chinese property company, Evergrande, were yesterday ordered to liquidate.
