Demolition work begins at Woolwich Catholic Club site
Work is underway to demolish the former Catholic Club in Woolwich years after it closed.
A number of plans have been and gone, with the latest being student accommodation. topping out at 14 floors in height.
Demolition work requires the closure of one traffic lane which hasn’t helped slow moving traffic in the area.
The current proposals were approved in April 2022 and includes 298 student rooms.
Previous plans were residential before a change of mind. Student accommodation is a massive growth area in cities across the UK and London – plus Greenwich borough – is no exception.
This was the first proposal eight years back which was eventually approved in 2017. Way back in 2011 plans were submitted to convert the existing building to residential use.
The site on Beresford Street sits close to a forthcoming Berkeley Homes development which has recently seen consultation.
Berkeley Homes are looking to build 660 homes in a forthcoming phase they’ve named “Ropeyards”.
So as ever lots happening around Woolwich. Just over the road Beresford Square is being completely reworked.
Now the site is fenced off demolition should proceed pretty quickly.
Good to see the old Catholic club site about to be brought back in to use. The newc student accommodation will be popular with students studying in the Borough and at Greenwich university.
