Forthcoming Woolwich Tesco plans at former pub proceed

Plans for a new Tesco in Woolwich appear to have taken a step forward after a long period of inactivity.

The former King’s Arms pub in Woolwich was demolished to make way for new homes with commercial space on the ground floor, with plans submitted for a Tesco back in

Two years have passed since plans for a new Tesco Metro went in with no movement seen since on fitting out the unit.

Now however a new submission has been made with the opening still happening.

The application itself isn’t of much interest and it’s pretty much standard Tesco stuff, with opening hours of 6.00am to 11.00pm Monday to Sunday.

It does appear a bit of an odd location for a Tesco Metro as passing footfall isn’t too great. There are of course lots of new homes in Woolwich but most are closer to existing shops.

Presumably those on the barracks over the road are thought to be potential customers. The barracks will of course be closing soon and redeveloped with new homes.

The former pub was bombed by the IRA in 1974 due to the site’s proximity to the barracks with two killed and 35 injured after a device was thrown through a window. This BBC article shows photos of the aftermath.

Two of the Guilford four were wrongfully convicted of the Woolwich attack and spent 15 years in jail before release, with no others ever found guilty. The perpetrators were never jailed.

A memorial for the two victims was unveiled in 2015 at nearby St George’s Garrison Church.

    • As the Tesco Store will be a convenience store it is close to homes in and around Hillreach, Artillery Place and Francis Street including the little estate on Cambridge Barracks Road. So I am sure the stote will get plenty of customers once open. As people always want a pint of milk, bread, cigarettes etc..
