New cinema set to open in Stratford at Olympic Avenue
Cinema chain Everyman are set to open a new cinema at Stratford Cross later this year.
If you don’t know what or where Stratford Cross is, it’s a new phase of development that sits between Westfield shopping centre, the Aquatic Centre and the Olympic Stadium.
Earlier this year I took a look at how a new cycle lane through the area was shaping up as part of a £12 million public realm project.
A number of cultural venues are set to soon open nearby to the east including a new V&A museum, BBC music studios replacing Maida Vale as well as the London College of Fashion and Sadler’s Wells.
The exact location of the cinema is 3 Olympic Way, which is part of an area seeing substantial change including office blocks in addition to cultural destinations.
Despite being a relatively new area the street has already seen a number of changes to improve public realm.
The latest being a dedicated cycle lane after some poorly though-through prior attempts.
The arrival of Everyman in town will see Stratford gain another place to catch a film after Vue within Westfield and Picturehouse to the east beside the Stratford Centre.
The Centre’s car park also holds the rooftop film club.
Given the size and scale of Stratford development they should hopefully all co-exist quite happily given geographic locations and catering to separate markets.
I’ve always wondered why a DLR station wasn’t built here – the spot just outside the tunnel looks like it has space, and aside straightening the track I don’t see how building it could be that expensive – just platforms, lifts and stairs either side of the pagoda building, and barriers to shut off for match days. The walk from Stratford & Stratford International to this part of the park is getting nicer over time, but is still a good 10 minutes and can be a bit of a vibe kill if you want to avoid Westfield.
I think this is Westfield Avenue, not Olympic Way. Or are they planning on renaming the road?
I’d wager you’re right. Let me look.
