Greenwich and Lewisham councils may see £8.5m for electric vehicle chargers

Lewisham and Greenwich Council’s are working together in an attempt to gain millions in funding for electric vehicle charging points.

A Lewisham Cabinet meeting next week covers the plan and notes that “The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OZEV) have made £36 million of LEVI funding available to support local authorities to work with the chargepoint industry, to improve the roll out and commercialisation of local charging infrastructure”.

At present Lewisham borough has 211 charging points.

Residential streets like this in Abbey Wood could see chargers if funds for Greenwich and Lewisham boroughs approved

If successful, the external funding of £2.8m would “be matched funded by external providers” which means it would be “at no cost to the Council.”

In total the two councils could form “a contract(s) for a period of 15 years at an estimated value of £8.5m”. In time it could raise revenue as “it is estimated that both Councils will receive income generated by shares and usage of the charging points”.

In coming years Lewisham Council expect chargers to more than quadrable by 2026.

Projected charging points in coming years

It may be somewhat surprising (and welcome) to some seeing both boroughs work together. Despite both being Labour authorities close working has not exactly been the norm for many years.

That’s hampered cross-border projects despite areas where it plainly makes sense, both in terms of cutting costs, obtaining revenue as well as planning for streets and public realm.

If they are emerging from silos to benefit residents across a range of projects then it’s welcome to see.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

    • We do need to see electric vehicle charging infrastructure invested in as still difficult to find charging points across London..ideally we need to see more fast charging electric vehicle charging points across both Boroughs for electric cars, vans and motorcycles where vehicles can top up with electric quickly so they can continue on their journeys..
Also we need to see more electric charging stations similar to the one located. on Wookwich Road where several cars can be charged at once.

    • Fair enough – more EV charging points are a must if there is any intention of hitting electrification and decarbonisation targets.
I would question the value of installing them on terraced residential streets, like Rochdale Road in Abbey Wood that is pictured. These streets are filled almost all of the time with the vehicles of residents, who could all quite easily charge their vehicles from their own homes’ power supply. Better to put the money towards electrifying public/on-street parking places which have high turnover or are occupied by cars whose owners don’t live in street-facing properties

    • I agree with you Mark you raised a very valid point. If you have a driveway where you park your car have a electric charging point insralled at home using your own electricity supply. Makes sense..Some electric companies are offering discounts on installing car charging points

      • Hi all . A bit about charging and costs as this could be relevant here. My home charging is 7kw charged at 09p per kWh a lamppost charger is about 4kw and charged at 53p per kWh moving on to DC rapid chargers will charge you anywhere up to 95p for charging stations from either 50, 150, 250 or 350 kWh.
But Tesla opens to all charging stations are about 50p per kWh and will deliver 200 + kw
Plus for £8.99 per month non Tesla owners can have a membership to slash that charging cost even more.
Sorry for this being a bit long but if you cannot charge at home go to a Tesla charger their is several around this area find out on the ZapMap app.
