Temporary Greenwich car park set to stay for another decade

A car park that was installed as a temporary measure due to Silvertown tunnel work could stay for another decade.

The double decked structure sits on the peninsula with space for 723 vehicles and developer Knight Dragon now seek to extend its usage.

A covering letter within the applications states that it “operates to provide temporary car parking for the O2 Arena for the duration of the Silvertown Tunnel construction works.”

“This decked car park is authorised for a temporary period, until the Silvertown Tunnel is completed, after which time a separate planning permission is required for its retention.”

It sits beside further extensive car parks covering much land across the peninsula. The application further states:

“English Partnerships (now GLAP) and AEG (the operators of The O2), which requires a minimum of 2,000 car parking spaces to be made available on the Peninsula for use by the O2 Arena in perpetuity“.

Knight Dragon now claim “retaining the decked car park provides additional capacity for parking, helping to more quickly free up the surface level parking for redevelopment for residential-led development”.
