Stratford station’s new entrance now expected to open by July say TfL

A new entrance to Stratford station is expected to open imminently after TfL missed a March 2024 target date.

A report before next week’s Programmes and Investment Committee states the 9th March target slipped and “opening was delayed by late design change and emerging issues throughout the delivery stage including unforeseen ground conditions and water ingress”.

Ready to open…hopefully

A new gateline has appeared all but complete for some months at the entrance beside Jubilee line platforms.

Upon opening a quicker link to Carpenters estate will be in place before 2,152 homes are either renovated or built in a proposal approved in February 2024.

It’ll also help disperse footfall fans or those heading to the Olympic Stadium (or the London Stadium as it’s now rather boringly called).

The report gives brief mention of other changes at the station. Network Rail are taking the lead at one by “funding and delivering capacity enhancement works at Stratford’s Southern ticket hall, and a new South-Eastern entrance for TfL to operate as part of an adjacent development on Network Rail land.”

Numerous developments are in motion around the station with a student tower approved beside steps leading to Westfield while another is underway a few metres along Great Eastern Road.

A post on that site should be uploaded soon. That’ll top out at 36-storeys and include 719 student rooms.

  • And you wonder why that people use Stratford station a lot as Stratford can be so busy during rush hour. So hopefully the new entrance should relieve some of the pressure coming in and out of the station.

I have been to Stratford many times and the station is very busy. Compare to Stratford International station that is much bigger and more spacious since HS1 was built and Southeastern Highspeed trains stop there. But Eurostar trains pass through at high speed.

  • Hey man love your website but one recent behaviour that is really annoying is when you click on the picture of an article it opens just the picture, not the article!

Please can you change it to open the article please? No one wants to just see the picture!

  • Stratford does need another entrance to help relieve the congestion and pressure of passengers and commuters coming in and out of Stratford station.

Especially when West Ham United are playing at home nearby at the London Olympics. I have been to Stratford station many times and the station is so packed during rush hour and when football and other events are taking place.

  • Use Stratford tube regularly and think the new entrance is useful. However during the West Ham game last night it was closed until 23:00. I asked staff about it and they said it will always be closed during events. I thought the whole point of the new entrance was to reduce congestion on event days. Also really annoying as it is about half a mile (and 2 crossings of the DLR) to get back round to the Jubilee line.
