Rooftop viewing gallery possible as part of major Canary Wharf tower revamp
Plans to radically reshape HSBC tower in Canary Wharf have been revealed as part of a major revamp.
The bank announced last year they would be leaving the site and changes would see a viewing gallery on the top floor.
While you can’t move for them in the City of London, Canary Wharf lacks any similar spaces open to the public.
Kohn Pedersen Fox succeeded in a design competition to alter the structure when HSBC departs in 2027. The completed tower should be ready in 2030.
Like much else in the area it follows a trend of departing from a purely office based building. A number of uses are planned.
To the east Wood Wharf is seeing thousands of new homes with the same planned at North Quay where work is now underway on a life sciences building.
Visitor numbers to the area continue to increase and leisure activities are a key goal for the group in charge of much of the area.
Public swimming returns this summer in Middle Dock as part of a wider program of changes around that area including a new pedestrian bridge and seating areas beside the Jubilee line station designed for events to be held.
8 Canada Square
The tower on site opened just after the Millennium with design from Sir Norman Foster.
Sitting at 45 floors and 200 metres its slightly shorter than its famous neighbour 1 Canada Square.
Canary Wharf group states when complete it will include workspaces, leisure, entertainment, education, and cultural attractions.
