Woolwich market square rebuild ramping up again

Work to renovate Beresford Square has ramped  up recently after work had previously stalled.

Recent visits have shown a hive of activity following the hiring of a new contractor after the previous company fell into administration.

Plan for Beresford Square

The below image shows a final layout and elements of seating and raised planters are taking shape.

Market stalls are mostly shifted to the side.

However a few will be located on the eastern side where more seating is to be installed.

This view below shows that area.

Layout taking shape

My latest visit appeared to coincide with a delivery of numerous building materials.

Delivery

The general appearance should begin to become every clearer in coming weeks while work on the café and pavilion ramps up.

On the downside a pub facing onto the square has closed. Revamp plans have previously gone in.

Pub beside square shut

The future café/pavilion did appear to have seen a bit more excavation since I last stopped for some photos.

Not rapid progress

This replaced the former toilet block between the Royal Arsenal gatehouse and eastbound bus stops towards Charlton and Greenwich.

And this is what is due to rise.

Woolwich market pavilion plan

In terms of cost (or design) impacts of the previous contractor going under we’ll have to wait and see.

No Greenwich Council meetings have discussed the plan for some time.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • The cafe/toilet block should have had more priority.

A town centre with no public toilets is a disgrace.

  • It should really nice when completed. I Just hope Greenwich Council maintain it has have a poor record on public realm improvements and maintenance..
I also hope people living working and visiting Woolwich will respect the area and use the bins etc provided. So hopefully the area can continue to look nice.
As other improvements in the past have quickly fallen in to a state of neglect as have not been well maintained.
