Bermondsey development at former biscuit factory now well underway
Work is now well underway on a development in Bermondsey set to total 1,624 homes upon completion.
The site is a former biscuit factory operated by Peek Freans which closed in 2001. Much of the site has sat empty for some time.
Plans have been around a while and in 2022 developer Greystar acquired the site for £973 million from Grosvenor for a Build to Rent development.
The site isn’t too far from the long-closed Spa Road station between London Bridge and Deptford. That closed in 1925 and is the reason tracks have a kink on the way into London as shown in the above image.
Future occupants will have Bermondsey on the Jubilee Line station as their nearest station.
Stations and development
Every station on the eastern half of the Jubilee line past London Bridge has substantial development within the vicinity including Canada Water, Canary Wharf, North Greenwich, West Ham and Stratford.
The three tallest towers will sit to the north of the Bermondsey site with shorter blocks across the rest of the plot.
Enabling work
Completion of a new school for Charter School Bermondsey was completed in January 2024 enabling on site work to begin.
Recent changes saw the level of social housing increase with 25 per cent now to be social rent and 10 per cent intermediate.
A large number of cranes are now up and in the above image a new block can just about be made out.
Unusually for a large site which is normally drip fed over many years, nine blocks are commencing at the same time.
According to the developers most recent construction update, work is also ongoing for the partial demolition of an old packing factory on site.
The first residents are expected to move in during autumn next year.
I’ve been seeing Peek Freans slowly coming down and expect the next time I go past on the train, that the demolition will have reached ground level. I remember the smell of baking biscuits and the dot matrix clock that lit up after dark.
