Surrey Quays cinema to close next month as new homes and shops on the way

An Odeon cinema is set to close next month as work proceed on redevelopment.

The site also comprises Hollywood Bowl and Pizza Hut near Surrey Quays shopping centre, with doors closing across the entire site on 18th September.

Part of the wider site already advanced

Approved plans see a new Tesco Extra supermarket and 384 new homes on site. Odeon’s nine screen cinema is very much a utilitarian box befitting an out-of-town site rather than inner London.

Though of course it’s a well-loved local attraction and the loss will be felt by many.

Back in 2021 I looked at outline plans for the site. Detailed plans were approved in 2023 which also cover a part of the former Printwork’s car park.

Upon completion the existing Tesco will close as the shopping centre is redeveloped.

The supermarket currently occupies a large part of the site.

A tower by one of the best architectural practices behind residential blocks currently working in London – Maccreanor Lavington – are behind certain buildings on the upcoming plot.

And it’s not just a dull box with clip-on balconies!

Forthcoming block at site

In time a large car park for the 1980s centre, which was built in a very different post-industrial London when the city’s population was declining, will be built upon.

Wider project

Surrey Quays to see thousands of new homes, shops and offices

Plots A1 and A2 close to Canada Water bus, London Overground and Jubilee line services are nearing completion with a substantial tower on site near Canada Water bus station.

It’s part of British Land’s wider changes across the town with the 1980s shopping centre also due to be demolished.

Bus station revamp work recently completed and building work is now underway at Surrey Quays station.

This will see a second entrance to the station.

Work can be seen below on the northern side of the road opposite the main station building.

Community Infrastructure Levy payments to Southwark council will total more than £90 million.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Very sad to see it close, I remember when it opened and was the first cinema I went to as a child. Although it had gone down hill in the last decade. I will catch one final movie before it closes for good.
