Asda readies to open new store in Greenwich

A further planning application has been submitted for a forthcoming Asda supermarket in Greenwich.

The shop is set to be located at 123 Greenwich South Street in a new build at the former site of Majestic wine store.

A short distance to the south sits the former Greenwich Magistrates’ Court which has approval for conversion into a hotel.

Applications have gone in this week regarding conversion and construction on that site.

Recently the site’s owner has sought to increase the overall number of hotel rooms on site. That was approved last year with 56 additional rooms taking the total to 349.

This neck of the woods i quite the hotel hotspot with various chains located nearby, with Asda will hope to appeal to – alongside locals of course.

Writing this post has also got me thinking of how there’s now so many food shops in Greenwich from the big chains. Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi, Co-op and Waitrose are all in the town and now Asda.

Sainsbury’s are also now set to open another near the o2 beside a Tesco.

You can view the latest application for Asda here.

Running a site alone takes time and a fair bit of money. Adverts are far from enough to cover it and my living costs as a private renter.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

    • Excellent News I cannot wait for the new Asda Supermarket to open. I belive it will be popular amongst local residents wanting to buy their daily essentials and want to shop locally.

    • It looks as if that Asda will be an “express” or “local” stocking a small number of essentials. It is also on the main road with no car park, so no one is going to be doing the weekly shop there.

    • Exactly anonymous201486 ideal for local residents to pop in for milk bread butter eggs etc which are daily essentials. Without thr need to have to travel to a larger store..
I am looking forward to the new local Asda store to opening.
We need more local amenities to serve an ever growing local population in the Borough..

    • Think branching out into smaller stores like this will be great for Asda. Need something to turn around their recent slump. This will become my local store so fingers crossed it goes well.

Any idea when the Majestic closed? I would have loved one of those right by my front door.
