Peckham pub revamp detail submitted after demolition abandoned
Details of a Peckham pub’s revamp have been submitted following demolition plans being pulled.
The Montague Arms would have been demolished if plans revealed in 2020 had proceeded. The pub survives with that application withdrawn.
A subsequent application for renovation and extension was approved in 2023. Six flats will be located above the bar area with a kitchen located within the basement.
Before closure the pub hosted live music for many years and known for it’s unusual internal decor. According to the pub’s Wikipedia page, Paul McCartney played in the 1980s.
A previous renovation project saw much character removed before final closure in 2019. The building dates from 1928-29 and is the last remaining structure from that era in the vicinity.
Much of the area – a short walk from Queens Road Peckham station as well as New Cross – is post-war housing.
Truman’s signage will remain – much as it does at the former Victoria pub in Charlton after conversion to a Domino’s Pizza.
The latest application contains details of what materials will be used with a submitted document stating “the applicant is presenting details of materials in advance of making orders.”
Currently blocked windows will see glazing re-installed as part of the renovation.
The latest application can be viewed here.
I am glad that permission to demolish has been refused. People just can’t go about knocking down character buildings to be replaced with stacked shoeboxes.
It is a valid design in many ways but I cannot see how it respects the original. It looks aboslutely nothing like it from any angle. Will they be able to have it as the much loved music venue that it was, with all that housing above? this amounts to demolition as far as I can see.
