Ten Antic pubs bought out of administration
A total of ten pubs operated by Antic have been bought out of administration by Urban Pubs & Bars after being placed for sale in July.
Thirteen pubs and a potential Woolwich pub site was placed into administration. The 13 pubs included:
The Elephant and Castle, Dogstar (Brixton), Gremio de Brixton (Brixton), Balham Bowls Club (Balham), The Sun (Camberwell), East Dulwich Tavern (East Dulwich), Tooting Tram and Social (Tooting), Antelope (Tooting), Clapton Hart (Clapton), Hagen & Hyde (Balham), Graveney & Meadow (Tooting), Red Lion (Leytonstone) and Coopers (Crystal Palace).
Three are not part of the newly announced deal including Dogstar in Brixton, Tooting Tram and Social and Coopers in Crystal Palace.
One sold site in Woolwich has never been a pub but seen approved plans never undertaken. I’ve been covering plans coming and going for many years now.
Antic formerly operated a separate site in the town with the Woolwich Equitable which closed over rent arrears.
Antic operate quite an obtuse legal structure for their pubs with various separate ownership companies. The group have seen problems for some years and saw a number of sites sold back in 2020.
Urban Pubs & Bars
So who are Urban Pubs & Bars? They’re a fast-growing group that own 42 venues in London and founded a decade ago in 2014.
Brands include the Salt Yard restaurant chain.
Their pubs include many locations in some of the priciest areas of London, while Antic pubs and sites were often in less wealthy locations.
Is this move at attempt to branch out or install expensive venues in other areas of London.
If so, good luck with the Powis Street site at the rather forgotten western end of Woolwich.
While the area has improved in recent years footfall is still low and much projected new housing still unbuilt.
It is good news for the hospatality sector which has really struggled since the
Covid Pandemic followed by the cost of living crisis. The hospatality sector are now being impacted by the ULEZ expansion. With many people choosing not to travel in London to restaurants and pubs etc to socialise with friends and family.
I wish the new venues which have been bought out of administration good luck and great success for the future.
Sadly Woolwich still does have a low footfall and many parts of Woolwich. Although Powis Street and Beresford Square are cute seeing works to improve them. Many areas of Woolwich are still in need of regeneration and improvements to public realm.
I agree Graham. Hare Street, Macbean Street and the area around Riverside House the old Waterfront Leisute Centre and the old Furlongs Garage need to see regeneration and Improvements to Public Realm. Hopefully construction work will start soon on the new developments around Spray Street which will help to improve Plumstead Road and Woolwich New Road.
