Canary Wharf evolution continues with theatre plan submitted
Plans for a temporary 1,300-capacity theatre have been revealed by Canary Wharf group.
The venue would be operated by Troubadour and located within the estate’s major expansion at Wood Wharf to the east where thousands of homes are now complete – or thereabout.
The venue marks another chapter in the continuing evolution of the area. Once known for little else but offices and financial companies, Canary Wharf group have launched expansions to the east led by residential towers.
To the north more residential blocks are proposed while a life sciences building with extensive lab space is underway at North Quay.
Cultural appeal
Yet one thing often still said to be lacking is cultural attractions. The group do put on events such as Winter Lights each year which can often be heaving.
There’s the Museum of London nearby but Canary Wharf Group itself have never fully gone in for cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums, theatres and live music.
With financial companies vacating (see plans for the HSBC tower’s transformation when they depart) the evolution of the estate is in full swing, and with that now appears cultural appeal and art.
Another move is public realm to create an area people will spend time rather than simply finish work and head home. This is shown by the creation of public space around Middle Dock.
Will it all work? Well, the area is already busy day and night now. But many former errors remains, such as some poorly thought out public spaces around the entire estate.
It’s also only a temporary plan. However once in place there can be resistance to removal.
If the proposed theatre is approved completion is expected by October 2025.
