Silvertown tunnel works mean further Blackwall tunnel closures into October

Transport for London have announced further closures of the Blackwall tunnel due to Silvertown tunnel construction.

A closer this this Sunday will be in place for southbound traffic. Closure is between 11pm on Saturday to 5am on Monday.

TfL state: “Bus Route 108 will be temporarily split and terminate at Canning Town station and North Greenwich across the weekend, with customers asked to use the Jubilee line to cross the river to complete their journeys with automatic refunds.”

Heading south

In addition “additional overnight closures will also take place overnight on Friday 11 October and Friday 18 October”.

Silvertown tunnel is due to open in 2025 with tolls applied to both the new tunnel and existing Blackwall tunnel.

Tolls

Over the past week it was reported that some unclaimed scrappage funds from ULEZ may be directed to reduce toll levels.

Both tunnels meet in Greenwich

That could throw traffic modelling in the air. It’s already been adjusted recently to show greater levels of traffic heading southbound through Greenwich borough.

Unlike north of the Thames, both Silvertown and Blackwall tunnel exist converge on the existing road network before traffic heads south to the A102 and A2, which often sees daily afternoon queues of some miles.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • Thank you for the warning. On the one unavoidable instance I needed to cross the river on a shutdown day, I wound up needed to drive from Fairlop to Southwark Bridge to make the return journey (Dartford and Rotherhithe had reported delays of two hours apiece).

The ferry is as serious an option as taking a scratchcard to a restaurant and hoping it will cover the bill.

  • Silvertown Tunnel will help to relieve traffic coming to and from East London and Southeast London and to act as a diversion route to get around London much easier.
