Foundations in for forthcoming Woolwich cafe and pavilion
Foundations have been installed for a new cafe and pavilion in Woolwich town centre beside Beresford Square.
The site was formerly public toilets for market traders and the public.
The forthcoming pavilion is a tad more impressive.
There have been concerns on the loss of public toilets though it was stated that toilets within the cafe would be open to the public without requiring any purchases. How that works out of hours remains to be seen.
Extensive landscaping is proposed. How that will be looked after is yet to be seen. It’s also set to substantially limit pavement space beside very busy bus stops – and in the future much footfall from new developments proposed nearby.
That includes Rope Yards (660 homes), MacBean Street (a possible 1,200 co-living rooms) and a new student accommodation block at the former Catholic Club.
Lack of foresight? We’ve seen similar down the road.
Other parts of the £25 million town centre upgrade are already in poor shape.
Since then I’ve visited twice and had a wander after people messaged me to look at specific areas and yep, there’s a lot going wrong. More on that soon.
Entirely inappropriate materials have been chosen. Really basic errors made. And what’s more is Greenwich councilors and officers were told but ignored it.
Work is coming on now and he new cafe and pavilion should look nice when completed
However. I am concerned to see the state of Woolwich already where works have already taken place. The area is dirty and public realm not maintain. People also need to learn to use bins and dispose of their rubbish correctly. I think businesses should have their rubbish collected more often possibly twice weekly to reduce the risk of rubbish building up causing rats and mice. This will come at a cost to businesses but will help to improve the area.
As we encourage people to visit Woolwich.
I am also concerned by the amount of narrow pathways around new developments by busy roads and bust stops making it hard for peopke to pass each other. It is also hard for parents with children in buggies, wheelchair users, partially sighted people to safely pass each other
Greenwich Council”s record on making roads and pavements safe for everyone is also very poor. It is just not a priority for the council.
I’m afraid that no amount of teaching is enough. People need to be fined on the spot for littering. But… what am I writing? Some individuals are found carrying a knife and are let go with only a slap on the wrist… It’s hard to believe that anyone would enforce an ASB fine for throwing rubbish on the street. Pearls before swine… Good luck Woolwich..!
