New pedestrian route through Lewisham town centre ready to open
A new route for pedestrians between Lewisham station and the town centre is almost to open as part of the Lewisham Gateway development.
It’s not the widest space perhaps considering footfall in future, and its width exacerbated above though the main image was using a wide-angle lens. This photo below was taken last week:
Meanwhile fences are down beside the bus stops. near Lewisham station,
For many years this has been the sole, cramped and congested route on foot between the station and town centre unless heading around by the Premier Inn (and future cinema).
Shops will open beside the bus stops including a Sainsbury’s with plans submitted recently.
A cinema plan or the site appears to also be back on. It was previously announced that Empire would open before they went under.
A new operator is looking to open on site. The developer is coy on just who that is. An announcement may be soon.
Direct route
In future when arriving at the road crossing via the central pedestrian-only route it’ll be a straight route onwards to town centre shops rather than the big brick wall now seen.
That’s due to plans for the demolition of the current shopping centre and a complete rebuild across the site, with initial demolition plans for the other side of the site submitted last week.
When all is said and done, Lewisham will be a hell of a lot different to how its been for many decades.
Forthcoming plans also include a redevelopment of Tesco to the north of the station.
I do hope that they keep their word and provide a safe environment 24/7.
You would hope so Levi Atkins. The Council and Police need to get on top of anti social behaviour and tackle it seriously.. people deserve and have a right to safe environments 24/7..
The developer and council are weirdly reluctant to say when this will open, it feels like it should be a big deal given the incredibly protracted nature of the development
This will be trashed with graffiti I regret.
Sadly you are not wrong Alan Bradley..I hate seeing everywhere covered in graffiti. It certainly is not art or nice to look at.
It’s all taken far too long and now that it’s open, what a disappointment.
