Dartford tunnel closed as work overruns while M25 also shut

There’s heavy traffic today at various Thames crossings after the Dartford tunnel failed to reopen at 5am as planned.

National Highways state that there was a “maintenance vehicle breakdown within the tunnel which requires emergency resurfacing works before the tunnel can re-open”.

Heavy queues can also be seen at the Woolwich ferry on all approaches as well as the northbound Blackwall tunnel.

Dartford tunnel maintenance should have been conducted overnight between 10pm and 5pm before the incident occurred.

Meanwhile recovery after a lorry fire on the M25 sees closures clockwise between J5 and J6.

5:30PM Update: Traffic is still extremely slow moving in various parts of south east London and Kent.
