Stratford station’s new entrance officially opened

Stratford station’s new entrance near Jubilee line platforms has been officially opened this week by a number of senior politicians and TfL staff.

MP for Stratford and Bow Uma Kumaran joined Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz were on site to do the honours with the entrance providing quicker access for some and enabling people to avoid a grotty bridge nearby.

Despite the official opening being this week the entrance has been open for many months now, though it missed the target April 2024 date by some months.

Disappointingly it’s closed when big events are on at the Olympic stadium, in contrast to earlier mentions of it being useable during events.

Site before entrance constructed

It was formerly in use as a car park for Network Rail.

Since opening I’ve passed by a fair few times, and recently noticed barriers wide open which can’t be doing TfL’s revenue protection much good. Do they have the staff for it?

Looking towards Carpenters estate

Those who will mainly benefit are mostly those that don’t currently live nearby, as it serves the Carpenter’s Estate which after many, many years of delay finally sees plans approved for part-renovation and mostly redevelopment.

Plans for 2,158 homes were approved in February 2024. Newham Council’s own developer Populo Living will undertake the development.

Redevelopment plan

Taller buildings are located alongside tracks heading west with low-rise homes in the centre of the site.

Funding

The project shows what can be achieved when organisations work together and use developer revenue.

£1m came from Newham Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) revenue from new development, the London Legacy Development Committee provided another £3.4m from section 106 and CIL agreements, £4m came from the Greater London Authority’s Strategic Infrastructure Fund plus another £1m from TfL.

Plans are being drawn up for further expansion to the station as thousands of homes, shops and offices are planned or approved in the area.

  • was anyone from RBG there? They don’t usually like to miss out when there is glad-handing to be done and canapes to be eaten

  • I have been to Stratford many times and I have seen how busy it can really get especially when there is football happening. Or if there are delays to trains that is causing backlog and congestion.

If only Stratford station was redeveloped to be like Stratford International station that would handle huge amounts of passengers and commuters changing trains that would relieve most of the pressure.

But the new entrance next to the Jubilee Line platforms is lot easier to access the station without having to using the main entrance and using the lifts and stairs to access the Jubilee Line and of course to access the station from Carpenters Estate.
