Emergency works halt Woolwich ferry services

Ferry services have been stopped on the Woolwich ferry while work is undertaken on piers.

They’ll be no service on Friday 1st November until at least the end of Sunday 3rd November due to emergency works according to London Travelwatch.

The Port of London authority also states:

Mariners are advised that on or about Friday 31st October 2024 works will commence to replace the fenders at Woolwich Ferry, North and South Terminals.

These works are expected to take place over 3 days.

Transport for London note: “The Woolwich Ferry is suspended until Monday 04 November, due to essential maintenance works.”

The ferry has had a torrid time in recent years since three older vessels were replaced with two new boats.

  • I have been on the Woolwich Ferry before and I never seen them broken down in my entire life. But it must be a pain for drivers and pedestrians to see ferry services temporarily suspended because of a broken down ferry.

Unless something happens such as a brand new road crossing to go from Beckton to Woolwich and to form what would be just like the Dartford Crossing.

But instead where the North Circular Road and South Circular Road would meet. Just like in Hanger Lane junction in West London.

  • Given how unreliable the ferry has become since the older boats were taken out of service, who would notice? I’ve stopped relying on it for any reason, it’s too slow and too unpredictable. What was a pleasure to use on foot and a lifesaver by car is – and I say this with experience – closer to chemotherapy. It’s a necessary evil that but one so arduous that you’d rather take your chances doing anything else than waste a few hours of your life.

  • I went to use the ferry this morning. Only one boat was in service.

Gave up and headed for the Blackwall Tunnel.
