Woolwich pub works begin beside Beresford Square
A Woolwich town centre pub which closed over the summer has seen scaffolding rise as work begins on the building.
The Ordnance otherwise known as The Old Gun Pit shut over earlier this year with both the pub and upper floors vacated. It had previously operated as a hostel upstairs.
Two previous plans had gone in to renovate the building, with one back in 2018 and another in 2022 which was approved in August of that year.
Lita Homes are behind the proposal.
Upper floors would become a hotel with renovations to the pub frontage. The corner entrance facing the Royal Arsenal site would be reinstated.
Much of the building’s Victorian character was removed or covered over in the 1950s.
The 2022 plan would see:
- Reinstatement of corner doors and windows
- Render removed and decorative tiling restored.
- Restoration of plaster console heads to bay columns.
- Gap in Woolwich New Street façade infilled with a setback simple brick façade with string courses to match both the Ordnance Public House and the adjacent buildings.
Meanwhile work continues on Beresford Square beside and a follow-up post will include a number of images showing the latest on site.
And then next year a row of shops – once destined for demolition – opposite on Woolwich New Road could see work begin as part of the 801-home Woolwich Exchange. Though perhaps don’t count on it given prior delays.
Don’t read too much into the street layout or shops in the above render. It’s merely indicative except for the building renovation and/or design.
No proposals for street changes have yet been made.
Exciting! I was worried this might have been one of those projects where they get planning then nothing happens for years. Looking forward to seeing it progress. It’s a landmark building in the town centre, it deserves to be restored. Hopefully they get a good operator for the bar, it would great to have a high quality pub/restaurant.
