Goldsmiths in New Cross to see sculpture installed

A sculpture from artist David Batchelor looks set to installed outside the Goldsmiths campus in New Cross.

Chromorama sits 21 metre tall and features 35 illuminated light boxes stacked one upon the other.  Each box is coloured glass lit from behind by LED lights with each rotated by about 53° anti-clockwise as it rises.

A 2.5 metre plinth is at street level will incorporating seating upon installation.

Previous life

The sculpture was erected in 2015 on the Broadgate campus between 3 Finsbury Avenue and 5 Broadgate in the City of London. Redevelopment of that site has seen it enter storage while a new location was found.

The application’s Design and Access Statement notes a review of possible locations saw discussions held with the City of London “regarding the principle of the sculpture being located to Goldsmiths University given the connection between David Batchelor and the University.”

Location of sculpture at Goldsmiths campus

“The City of London has confirmed they would be supportive of the sculpture being relocated to the University. To enable the planning obligation in the Section 106 agreement for 2FA [previous location] to be fully discharged, planning permission, as well as any other consents associated with its relocation, are required to be secured.”

At 21 metres in height it’ll certainly make a mark particularly at night.

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.

  • It reminds me a little of the light display that sat for many years atop the Hayward Gallery at the South Bank Centre, I rather like it.
