Revealed: Erith post office development from Bexley developer

Bexley Council developer BexleyCo have revealed an image showing potential development above and around Erith post office.

The site at 89 Erith High Street (Corner of Erith High Street and Bexley Road, Erith) would see 33 flats within a 4-6 storey building.

Proposal beside Erith station

It appears the existing frontage will remain with homes built both above and either side.

It’s the latest site proposed for new homes from Bexley Council’s developer BexleyCo, with another proposed a short distance away near Erith station.

Further flats are proposed to the west in a controversial development built on a small park in a densely populated area.

History

Former Erith High Street now a soulless shopping centre with blank walls facing streets

Erith post office is one of few Victorian buildings remaining after mass redevelopment in the 1960s.

Over the years plans have been drawn up to bring back traditional street layouts to Erith with much of the area now dominated by the 1960s shopping centre, a 1990s low-rise supermarket and a substantial car park.

Some way from what it once was. See an image of Pier Road here. The area was obliterated.

A new owner specialising in redevelopment purchased Erith shopping centre in recent years but no plans have been revealed.

Part of the site is occupied by housing.

Consultation is currently ongoing on the post office site was a planning application expected in 2025.
