Final look at Woolwich market square upgrade as year ends
With 2024 now drawing to a close a quick post taking a look at how upgrade work at Woolwich’s Beresford Square is shaping up.
It’s only a few weeks since the last update but given it’s now looking almost complete it’s worth a brief look again.
Work begun in September 2023 and saw delay while the initial contractor went under.
Work has been back in full swing for months and a few changes can be seen in recent weeks with much of the square now sees seating and other street furniture in place alongside paving and lighting columns.
Raised planters are ready to receive greenery and trees have been planted.
In the above image a future water feature/fountain can just about be made out. While this area was being excavated former toilets long closed were revealed.
The below image gives an overview and fountains can be seen in front of the Arsenal Gatehouse.
Something else spotted was the old Metropolitan Drinking Fountain Association cattle trough placed in the square.
Have a click and zoom if you can’t spot it.
Not much changes can be seen on the western side but that was always slightly ahead with trees planted some weeks ago along with steps to where market stalls and a cafe will be located.

Not a great deal of time to go then and it should all open in the first months of 2025 barring any problems.
Market traders will move back and that in turn should see the fountain on General Gordon Square – where traders had been relocated – uncovered and turned back on.
And that just about warps up (sorry) my last post before Christmas. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the site and found information of interest over 2024.
Thanks also to all who donate and contribute support. I wouldn’t be able to pay rent without such kind people.
If you fancy helping out, details are below. Have a great Christmas!
