New lighting scheme for Greenwich foot tunnel building
Plans are in for a new lighting scheme to be applied to the southern Greenwich foot tunnel building at Cutty Sark Gardens.
Work is being funded as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The structure is Grade II listed and was designed by Sir Alexander Binnie opening in 1902.
The application states that “The proposed lighting concept will graze light down the brick exterior of the rotunda from lighting positioned under the roof parapet”
While the current application only covers the rotunda, previous details revealed that work will cover a wider area including the “installation of illuminated handrails, improved visibility of the steps, enhanced lighting and signage to improve visibility and wayfinding”.
Images within the application are quite outdated and show the water feature constructed in 2012. It was quickly switched off and that was that. Never used again. The idea back then was it would rise and fall in line with the tide.
Shared Prosperity Fund
A total of £2.6 billion is being made available under the UK Shared Prosperity Fund “by March 2025, with all areas of the UK receiving an allocation from the Fund via a funding formula rather than a competition”.
Greenwich Council opted to spend at Cutty Sark Gardens, Arnott Close and Leslie Smith Square.
As ever with projects like this maintenance will be key. The application states that all existing uplights on the foot tunnel building are broken, as are a number of bollards featuring lights in the area.
Exterior Architecture are behind plans on all three sites.
So are the lifts working ?
