Thamesmead block damaged after lightning strike
A 12-storey block recently built on the former Tavy Bridge site in Thamesmead has seen damage after a lightning strike.
London Fire Brigade state they were called at 3.13pm on 27 January after reports a building that had been hit by lightning on Kite Close in Thamesmead.
The structure saw damage and LFB worked alongside the local authority and building management company to make the scene safe.
Kite Close sits between Harrow Manorway and Cygnet Square beside Southmere lake.
After eleven years of control across Thamesmead, Southmere Village phase one – where this building is located – is the only plot Peabody have completed in the south of the town near Abbey Wood station.
Thankfully there were not reports of injuries.
After this incident it does makes me think just how safe are taller buildings in reality. As the building hit be lighting is not that high compared to a lot of other skyscrapers being built.
We never really think of buildings being hit by lighting let alone high rise buildings being damaged in storms with gale force winds like we have recently seen and do appear to happening more often over winter months.
Some corrections to your post – the part of building that was hit was from the south tower block which is above the co-op on Yarnton way / Wagtail walk. Kite close is opposite end and closer to the gym
I also must say that I was fairly impressed by the quick response as it was less than an hour from the strike before the area was fully cordoned off to ensure safety.
An update to residents indicated that the building was due for a lightning conductor test which is now being brought forward because of the incident.
