Bermondsey biscuit factory towers on the rise

The first tower is on the rise as part of a large-scale redevelopment of a former biscuit factory in Bernondsey.

The site will see 1,624 homes on what was the home of Peek Freans and will make quite an impact locally and for those heading to London Bridge by train.

Development overview

From 1866 until 1989 biscuits were produced on site located directly beside railway lines into London Bridge resulting a distinct smell in the area.

Note the proximity to the long-closed Spa Road station where tracks split apart a short distance north. Remnants of former platforms are still visible when passing.

Unusually for London the site is being developed quickly after purchase by current developer Greystar with all plots set to complete by 2027. A far cry from the extremely slow, drip-feed we often see including nearby at sites such as Deptford Landings.

That site of 1,132 homes looks set to take 20 years.

Tower core on the up

Greystar purchased the site from Grosvenor in 2022 with planning approval for a revised scheme given in 2023. That saw an increase of 88 homes and social housing rise to more than 300.

Alongside homes the masterplan includes a 600-student secondary school alongside retail, leisure and community space.

Render dates from 2019 before design changes

The site’s tallest tower will top out at 102 metres and make quite the impression in an area that’s currently low to mid-rise.

Alongside new builds some existing structures are being retained and reused at the biscuit factory.

Note ground floor arches mirror the railway to the right in the below image.

Rising on site

Despite few tall buildings in the immediate vicinity Maydew tower isn’t too far away, and while the biscuit factory sees towers rise that one is now coming down.

As a private renter living costs are very high and ads bring in relatively little to the site. I run it alone, and you can support me through Paypal with a one-off or monthly donation here

Another option is via Patreon with offers monthly payments by clicking here

Finally there's the Ko-fi option

Many thanks

There's also a Facebook page for the site here

I've lived in south east London most of my life growing up in Greenwich borough and working in the area for many years. The site has contributors on occasion and we cover many different topics. Living and working in the area offers an insight into what is happening locally.
