Work underway on new Blackheath Village Sainsbury’s
Work to open a new Sainsbury’s in Blackheath Village is underway following the approval of plans.
The site at 25-27 Tranquil Vale was formerly Pare’s footwear. An earlier plan for the frontage covered on this site in 2024 was refused before Lewisham Council planners gave approval.

The supermarket chain once had a shop at 13 Blackheath Village which closed back in 1959, and the excellent Sainsbury’s archive website has a number of images covering the period from 1900 to 1959.
It includes the closure notice from 1959. You can’t much more 1950s than this.

The unit was on the corner now home to Postmark just across from Blackheath station.
See here for a view showing the scene in 1900 with J. Sainsbury – as it was then known – on the corner.

Vale House which will be home to the new store is Grade II Listed and dates from the early 18th century.
Just last month a further application for 25-27 Tranquil Vale was approved which includes “alterations to the rear boundary walls, including reconstruction and installation of support structures, and alterations to the first floor roof terrace boundary treatment”.

Much work is focused on the rear of the building to facilitate the shop.
According to signs in the window property guardians are living on upper floors – or at least were.

I think a supermarket in this location would be welcome. I believe there is also another one due to open nearby, where the old Lloyds Bank was. I couldn’t find any documentation showing the proposed frontage, but I hope they do a decent job with it, as the building has a rather handsome façade.
I agree Levi I also tnink a supermarket in this location will do well for both local residents and people visiting the area.
Yes there wete plans to open another little supermarket in the old bank. If I remember rightly it was going to be an Asda Store. But I might be wrong.
These smaller stores tend to well used by residents for their daily essentials. It also encourages people to shop locally..
Interesting and great. Everything else is rather expensive there. Previous proposals included an Asda ( https://fromthemurkydepths.co.uk/2024/08/27/blackheath-could-see-asda-store-open-in-village/ ) and Tesco ( https://www.fromthemurkydepths.co.uk/2021/08/11/tesco-look-to-open-in-blackheath-village/ ) but it seems like only Sainsbury’s have gone ahead.
FYI the new Tesco Express in Lombard Square has finished fitting out and is being stocked. Rather sooner than I expected given how few blocks are ready for move-in.
I believe the Asda is also still going ahead.
Sainsbury’s is an odd fit for Blackheath Village, especially when you consider the big store just down the road at Lee Green, There is already a Morrison’s local and the rather lovely independent retailer diagonally opposite the station.
A Little Waitrose would be more conducive to the area’s demographic. Sainsbos is a bit down-at-heel
@Enwee Turrets-Tuesday: agreed. The nearest Waitrose is down off Creek Road. Fine if you have a car, but too much of a stretch if you are relying on the buses.
As someone without a car, and not wanting to rely on food delivery where I can’t pick my own items, having a supermarket (albeit small) in the Village will be incredibly helpful. The Morrisons is terrible and the independent store opposite the station is extremely expensive. Not everyone in Blackheath is made of money!
